Not sure if this has been raised/answered in another thread but here goes...

Just got in after a quick 20k ride. about half way round hands began to get numb. I have experienced this before but never so early in the ride.
Is there anything to be worried about here? Or anything that can be done to prevent it?

Have you checked the fit of the bike - you may be putting too much weight on it?
What bike are you riding, are you able to change hand positions regularly?
Are you wearing good padded gloves?

Called cyclists palsy, comes up quite often on here if you search. If new to cycling and all the above are a yes, it should go as you put the miles in

Thanks Vickster
I was happening more regularly and has not happened for a while - I have been back on the bike since November now - Giant Rapid 3 and yes to padded gloves. bike feels a good fit for me.
Hopefully today was a blip and it will pass

I'm new to cycling and I get numbness and loss of feeling in my hands during every ride. I've decided its because I'm doing something alien and my wrists are in a position that cuts the blood flow etc. When it happens I generally just dangle a hand to get some blood back and repeat with the other hand then use a different position on the bars. I just need to remember to change hand position every so often. At first I thought it may be something to do with my winter gloves being too constritive but no its the hand position on the bars, I think?

Is your saddle level? Some people have theirs tilted forward for "comfort" - this means that more weight is placed on your hands as you use your arms to prevent yourself from sliding forward, and voila, sore hands.

Bike fit is likely to be an issue, I'd do some research on saddle height, bar height etc.

Thanks everyone - some points to consider there. the bike feels comfortable enough when I am riding but may be worth wile just double checking the fit. It doesn't happen all the time but today seemed odd as I was only out on a short ride in my lunch break

I used to get this but a combination of moving my seat back, flatter seat, changing hand positions (huds, end of drops and braking drops position) and I believe what cured it the most, running correct tyre pressures!

For a while I was running 120psi front and rear and I only weighed just under 12st! I am now 11st 3lb and run 90 front 100 rear which is much more comfortable, alot less vibes through the bars, better grip in the wet and ive yet to get a pinch flat!

I like a nice fete, the beer tents and displays of extra large vegetables are always tempting.^_^

A double wrap of bar tape might help.

Except the OP has a Giant Rapid, a flat bar hybrid

I always put ergo grips on my flat bars if not already on there. Ergon get good feedback, I personally go for the cheaper Specialized ones (especially as they do smaller for women's hands)

Or of wanting to add bar ends something like this http://www.fudgescyclestore.com/index.php?p=190459&gclid=COOU8Yz6-LsCFY3LtAodGU8AgA
