I kept running out of energy at about 2 hrs and it seems to be generally agreed that refuelling is a Good Thing. I just assumed that was for serious riders, I only go an average of 14-15mph. Anyway today I tried half a Flapjack that the kids have for their packed lunches. I should add that I don't have a water bottle either. 2 miles later I was still trying to swallow it. Most of it still stuffed into my cheek, definitely the small rodent look. So what do you think ... please don't say bananas..I'll have to eat it with the skin on or fall off trying to peel it.

You do know you are allowed to stop?

Not for long, but you are allowed.

You need a water bottle to sty hydrated. Dehydration initially causes similar feelings to hunger do drinking will help.
You could also try gels or a bottle with power drink in it (not lucozade sport types).
The inability to salivate and swallow was probably partial dehydration, and they say that by the time you are thirsty you are dehydrated.
Also, a power drink will help replace electrolytes as well as essential minerals. A 500ml bottle will last you 50 miles no problem.

Waterbottle hmm. I know its a good idea...its just the gear thing petrifies me. I think there are two types of beginner: one gets the gear and feels like a proper athlete, the other gets a pair of cycle shorts and spends two hours wandering round the house feeling a complete prat and eventually goes out with a pair of woolly tights over the top and spends the whole ride sliding off the seat and looking like they forgot to put their skirt on. Guess which one I am.

Good question KateK I'm new to cycling and understand the importance of fluids and food but what fluids and food. What is a power drink and why not lucozade and apart from jelly babies what else should we eat

Could I carry a thermos in my pannier along with my folding seat, handkerchief and picnic blanket?

Jelly babies! Yes! I could string them into a necklace, pretend I'm a Kirstie Allsop fan and then eat them when noone is looking.

Flapjack, fig rolls, malt loaf, jam sarnies (you know who you are, if you're reading this)...

Lucozade will fizz up won't it... unless you mean the flat stuff.

Fig rolls. I love fig rolls....and they don't need peeling!
Lucozade: the only use I know for it is for testing blood sugar levels during pregnancy... the two and only times I drank it. UGH
