I am wanting to touch up my old bike around the rear forks and chainstay. Blue hammerite is almost a perfect match and I was wondering if it will adhere directly onto the aluminium frame or do I need a specific primer/undercoat.

Doesn't it say on the tin?

I can't remember if I've ever used it on Ali, but it seems to stick like 'poo to a puppy' so I think I'd give it a go.
Just make sure the surface is nice and clean and de-greased.
If you don't want the hammer finish I've found that if you brush it out again as it dries it helps to minimise the effect.

Just looked on Hammerite's website.

It says to use their "direct to galvanised" product on aluminium, (as opposed to ordinary Hammerite).

That's probably because Ali and galvanising require an etch primer, as the OP says it's an old bike I wouldn't bother with the extra expense.

If already got the paint go for it! worse that will happen is it will peel off though bear in mind hammerite does react with alot of other paint and the need to follow application instructions . If paint not been purchased and only touching up chips would have thought touch up stick would be cheaper.....just a thought

Thanks for your input guys, I have a tin of Hammerite of the correct colour lurking in my garage somewhere, and since it is an old bike (also lurking in the garage) I think I will give it a go..
