Hi I've got halo retro wheels with a campagnolo freehub on my bike it's a 10 speed I'm wondering if I can put a 8 speed shimano freehub on there instead of the one I've got on there at the moment
I've changed the groupset to shimano so that won't be a problem I can buy one from halo but they want about £60 pounds I thought there must be a way of putting a 8 speed one on there for half of the price of that

For much less @TAV!

You can put a 8 speed on a 10 speed hub using a 1.7mm spacer. However Shimano cassettes don’t fit on Campagnolo freehubs and vice versa as they of a different design.
You might be able to find an old campagnolo 8 speed cassette?

Yeah I had a spacer on my old wheels but I was wondering do i need to buy from halo or can i get a cheaper brand freehub to fit a halo retro wheel or are they only compatible with the same brand wheel?

Freehubs are usually specific to the hub so other makes and brands don’t fit.

Could you fit a miche 8 speed cassette on your pre existing campagnolo freehub rather than swap to a shimano hub? It might be cheaper and I can’t see a chain caring if it’s shimano or campy?

That's great news I thought you could only fit a campagnolo cassette onto the freehub due to the difference in spines.

Miche do Campag compatible cassettes (they also do Shimano compatible ones too so be careful what you are ordering).

However if you have put shimano 8 speed shifters on it, then you need to have a shimano derailleur otherwise it wont work, and then if you have a campag / miche(campag) spaced cassette, it wont work with shimano shifter / derailleur as the sprocket spacing is subtly different.

....So you are back to needing a Halo/Shimano freehub to fit your Halo wheels, or finding some Campy 8 speed shifter / deraileurs

Going back to the start, is it a road bike or flat bar, and what is the issue with the 10 speed campy groupset you hint that its currently running on?

Its the indexing that's the issue. The spacing is 5mm vs 4.8mm so it will be chattery at one end of the cassette or the other (or both ends if you index the middle cogs. You have 1.6mm to lose / accommodate. which might not sound a lot but its enough to throw the indexing out and wear you chain and cassette much quicker than it should do.

google it - most people advise against such a bodge. Its not like exceeding your advised RD capacity by a tooth difference, where it works with no detriment to anything

It's a road bike genius it was a 10 speed but I had a problem with the power torque chainset I tried to take it off but needed a puller not like the ultra torque chainset like I had before, to be honest I'm feed up with campagnolo the prices are more expensive and there's always special tools you need to do any work by yourself. The bike I have is for audaxs so I'm going back to 8 speed it's cheaper and I'm not concerned with the weight of the bike plus I wanted to put a triple on it. Cheers for all the advice I was hoping to change the free hub for a cheaper one but it looks like I'll have to buy one from halo or get new wheels.
