Looking at trying fixed wheel rather than single speed.
Does it just need a lock ring to keep it on?

You don't need a lock ring. I only put one on after 5 years of fixed as the new wheels came with one. If you is doin skidz then get one.

Back pedaling has the potential to loosen lockrings. I'd have one just to be safe, for less than £5 for a bit of extra safety you can't really complain.
