While looking to see if Halfords had any online instructions on how to fit the wiper blades I had just bought for our car, I discovered that they are having a 10% off everything weekend (which runs through to Monday)

To qualify you have to order stuff online, but can reserve and collect it at your local store to avoid shipping charges.

NB Halfrauds wiper blades live up to their fine reputation. They claim that they come with full fitting instructions, but these turn out to be minute diagrams which are impossible to decipher. Even more confusingly their online system suggests I should have got different wiper blades from the ones recommended in the store.

Moral of the story is that it might be worth using the 10% discount to buy a spare inner tube, but I wouldn't get anything more complicated.

Champion blades are the best I've used. Halfords only sell their own brand and Bosch.

Halfords Professional tools are excellent though and carry a lifetime guarantee. Snap a socket and they'll just hand you a new one. That said the quality is so high you'll be doing well if you can break one. Highly recommended.

Halfords arent as bad as some peeps make em out to be. I have a 1-year bike plan with BikeHut [free labour on all maintenance and repairs & free 25point annual service] for only 15quid!!
If that wasnt enough they even waived the "parts and accessories must be purchased from halfords" clause and allow me to give them new parts which they then fit for free! So far, Im very impressed with Halfords service.

The best place for wiper blades is Wilkinson's (Wilko's). They cost next to nothing and are easy to fit as you just copy how the old ones you are taking off fit.

Wilko's is also a good place for cheap, good quality bike stuff that is OK for most uses - the LED lights are superb and only cost £5 a set and you can get tyres, inner tubes, oils, puncture outfits and lots of other basic stuff at low prices too. The only bad thing about Wilo's is that they don't do the 700c tyre size any more in the 23 and 25mm widths. The cheap tyres they did in these sizes were quite good and puncture resistant but the demand from customers was too low so they stopped stocking them.

halfords can be very hit or miss. my carrera was set up very nicely by a chap who now plies his trade in a proper bike shop. this contrasts with the spanner monkies who set up my daughter's bike, to the extent that the front brake came on if you turned right .

that said, the carrera range is very good value and well worth a punt if your local halfords has decent mechanics, or you are one yourself. don't be afraid to take a halfords bike into a lbs for servicing either. one of my local ones makes a good living from servicing them, and i reckon he's had more money from me than halfords did, even though that's where i bought the bike.
