I went out and did about 25 miles this morning on my new (to me) road bike. What a difference to my old Ridgeback hybrid. However, my feet are killing me, and for some reason I cannot flick the left hand pedal round to insert my foot into the toe clip - and no, I don't want to go clipless. I have size 12 feet, and wide as well, and the pedals I fitted onto the bike are just too small. I like a pedal I can rest my foot on not have to balance my foot on it!

I popped down to Halfords, as with all their failings, they do have a reasonable stock of spares. No problem with the pedals and toeclips, a good choice on the shelves and I was soon sorted. At the checkout the girl asked for £6 more than I thought it was. the pedal was £6 dearer than the price tag on the shelf. She said probably someone had put the pedal on the wrong position. I went back to look and there were two rows of them at the price I thought, not the price it scanned in at. At the counter in the bike bit the assistant was on the phone, so I waited to query the prices, and waited, and waited. Eventually she got off the phone and acknowledged me, then the blasted phone rang again and she picked it up to reply. I left the pedals on the counter and took my leave. On the way home I looked into the Go-Outdoors shop, they had pedals but no toeclips, so I didn't bother. The annoying thing is I was in Spokes LBS in Epping this morning, but didn't know I needed pedals then.

typical of halfords. the best one is when there is a long Que at the weekend and the woman on the till shuts it down to go fit a baby seat into someones car... yes, this actually happens

I know that shops make innocent pricing mistakes, but Trading Standards need to made aware of this. Tesco often show one peice on the shelf and charge another at the checkout; when this is pointed out they refund the difference without a problem. They don't have to, because I think of the concept of an 'invitation to treat'. TS do take a very dim view though of this kind of 'mistake'.

If its not too inconvienent to go back i would suggest the following .
And to anyone else who finds themselves in Halfrauds, check on the back of the price ticket for the 6 didgit code, its either hanging in the plastic end of the hook or slipped into the plastic edge strip and compare to the number on the packaging. Its usualy found on 95 % of products.
This will prove the item is the same as the ticket and therefore the price its on sale for.
Its a fact that many Halfrauds are so badly run or staffed or both that price changes dont get done on time or at all.

If the codes match insist on the lower price & if you get the surly approach from staff ask for the manager & they are generally so harrassed and sacared of trouble they will oblige.
I have found its so bad in my local stores its worth going in for a look just to see whats on offer, if you get my drift.

tesco used to give you the item free if the shelf price and checkout price were different.

have had a few bottles of scotch at a bargain price with this

halfords are very much hit and miss when it comes to customer service. some branches are great and some are dire .

That happens almost every time (which isnt often if that makes sense) i go in Halfords, usually for Conti innertubes. They never come out at the right price. makes me think its deliberate.

Funnily enough i walked past spokes this morning on the way to the Tube. It'd be a supreme co-incidence if it were you coming out of there with a yellow jacket and a (possibly) yellow dropbar bike

i too have purchased from halfords (robin b--ta-ds) and to find when i get to the till its a lot more dearer !!!!!

Ive always insisted (and usually done calmly) that the till is wrong. I've never had to argue the case, they sometimes make a call or do something with the till, and give it me at the 'correct' price.

Half right, I was on a yellow dropbar bike but I was wearing a red jacket so I guess it wasn't me.

I worked for halfords when I was 16 I didn't have a clue about bikes and they chucked me in cycles my advice never go there. Stick with local bike shops they know what they are doing and it's always better to keep a family run shop open, and not give money grabbing super stores

Unfortunately I have some inside knowledge of all this.
The tills are generally not wrong as they are updated centrally, its the fact that price changes happen daily, manually by staff.
e.g. A pair of £19.99 pedals can be reduced on a tuesday to £14.99 only to be increased to 21.99 in 14 days time.
Its often the case that none of the price changes have been done within that time so at the end of that period you end up with a product at £21.99 priced as £19.99.

I noticed their shares have dropped over the last couple of months steadily to almost the lowest ever. Give them grief if they get it wrong because they deserve nothing better.

Grrrrr this is a pet hate of mine.

Sainsbury's Purley Way, Croydon. Virtually everytime I've shopped there, and bought something reduced or BOGOF, I've been ripped off. So much so, that I'm sure it's deliberate, I mean I can't be arsed most of the time to trawl back and waste an hour of my life to get a couple of quid back, and I'm guessing lots of people will be the same, that's if the overcharging is even noticed.

I even sent a letter to HQ about it, and was ignored. I avoid the place as much as I can now, and when I do go, I check the receipt before leaving!!

Rant over.
