I have a short tough D Lock that fits in the front pocket of my back pack. Seems like I chucked any moulded attachment dock thingy....

Any ideas on how to attach this to frame (without rattling) when I don't want the backpack.

It might sound obvious but try googling for (make of lock) + bracket, you can usually get a spare frame bracket from most manufacturers easily enough to not have to bugger about with hacks. Cost will be a tenner or less.
Abus and SJS cycles sell a range of universal brackets for example. I bought an Abus U lock 10 years ago and a quick look at their site shows that they still sell a bracket now that'll fit.

Where do you lock the bike up ? I used to leave my lock at the gym so I didn't need to take the Lock with me.

For a similar thing (heavy, tube cross section) I laid the bike on its side, laid the thing on the seat tube, tied it to the back side of the tube using length cut-open inner tube sections, just double knots, tensioned so that I could shift it in/out easy enough. .
I found Inner tube rubber as quite handy in alot applications.
