I had recently bought an old TREK road bike on E-bay. Seller said all it needed was a service and new cables. Anyway, got the bike and yep the gears would not change so I booked it into my LBS and asked them to give it the once over, a service and change the cables. Was really looking forward to getting out on the bike.

They rang me today.......... disaster! The shifters are totally knackered apparently and thats the reason why the gears wont change. Im totally gutted. The guy in the bike shop said I need 7 speed STI shifters. I have had a look on some sites and e-bay but I am not too sure what im looking for. Can anyone recommend a set of shifters that I can get fitted and more to the point where can I get some?

Why not get the guy in your LBS to recommend some?

Did you pay with PayPal? If you did, it's possible to request a partial refund to compensate you for the misinformation. So because the description stated that new cables/servicing was the thing needed to make the shifting work, then the description is therefore wrong... misleading whether intended or not.
I've obtained a partial refund via PayPal myself. It helps to email the seller first and respectfully state the problem and that you'd like to resolve the matter via PayPal. Within your PayPal account you can Open A Dispute for the transaction; there's facility to request a partial refund that you consider fair to yourself and the seller. In this case the reason for opening a dispute would be that the item is significantly not as described. Because you were not able to realise that costs would be incurred replacing/fixing the shift levers.
With regard to the shifters, as Palinurus says, ebay could be useful - 7 speed STI's pop up regularly in auctions.
Well, I hope it all gets sorted out soon. Best of luck.

You have all been a great help, thanks. The shifters pictured are divverent form the ones fitted at the mo (different shifter movement) if that makes sense but if they are 7 speed STI's then they may do the trick

Might be worth upgrading to 9 speed. 7 speed parts are harder to find. I discovered this when the rear (shimano sora) derailleur went tits up on a bike. Bought a tiagra that had 9 speed written on it, then tiagra 9 speed shifters on e-bay, coupled with a new 50/34 crankset (to replace 52/39), new chain, cassette and cables. It feels like a different bike (almost is eh?). Now I want to use it for more than just commuting.:becool:

I'd second this tho you may also need a new wheel (or rebuild with new hub) as it may be a freehub and not a casette that is on there, oh and a new casette as well as sti shifters but they would be easier to find. Has been a while since I saw a 7 speed sti bike. Hope you got the bike cheap, the seller really should have told you........

There's no need to fix what aint' broke if it's just new shifters reqd why suggest to him that he might need a new wheel and this and that + more expense when the other parts may be just fine - he's only just bought the thing! There's nothing wrong with 7 speed and nothing wrong with freewheel hubs.

The guy in the bike shop did say that buying a whole new set of shifters, cassette and back wheel was an option but an expensive one. Its my first real road bike and have spent some money on it just to get it to where it is now (new seat, seat post, bar tape, tyres etc) so I thought it was ust the cables and a service required.

I have had a reply from the guy who sold it to me and surprise, surprise he said he knew nothing about the shifters being goosed. So are 7 speed shifters hard to come by? I had a look on e-bay and found some Shimano 105 Dual Control shifters but he could not tell me if they were 7 speed or not.

What is it you need exactly? Both left/front and right/rear shifters? You could obtain them singly but they'd have to match really though or it'll look a bit odd. I assume it's 21 speed (triple chainset)? Hasn't your LBS got these parts - that's what I don't get, I kind of thought that was the whole point of taking your bike to a LBS for them to sort all that then charge you lots of money for the privilege for something you can fix yourself, or is it that you want to buy and fit them yourself? Do you need the STi combi-type ones with brake levers too? I use those.

See: http://www.woollyhatshop.com/view_product.php?id=2480
or eBay (same company/seller): http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Shimano-Acera...temQQptZUK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR

I've just put a pair of those on my mountain bike, they're alright.
