After doing lots of reaserch on my first bike and having discounted (after trying) a Spez Secteur and Ginat Defy 3, I set my heart on a Scott Speedster S50 from Evans. I ordered the bike on Monday to be sent to the store and they said they will ring me today (Thursday) to let me know it had been built etc.. Got a call today saying they didnt actually have them in stock. I was not best pleased as I was told it would be available.

The other alternative they gave me was a 1.2 Trek, but because of my disappointment over the Scott I am not sure whether this would feel like a '2nd best' bike. I'm not even sure I want to order from them anyway, especially as the assistant said he was only 90% sure he could get the Trek in at the shop.

Not sure whether I should bite the bullet and look at the Trek or go for something else from a different company? I would prepfer to use a LBS so if anyone has any recommendations in the Manchester/ Cheshire area, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks - Nick

LBS is best option most of the time. Not got the Trek 1.2 myself, heard good things about it. I wish I could recommend some LBS' but I live at the opposite side of Manchester.

It's not a LBS but the guys at Edinburgh Bicycle in Rusholme are very helpful indeed. I have found Evans (whence I bought my Scott Sportster last year at Chill Factore) very poor on the customer service front. Similarly don't think much of Bicycle Smithy on A6. Bicycle Doctor, again in Rusholme, are knowledgeable, give excellent service and are honest. Proper LBS.

Bicycle Doctor and Edinburgh COOP are only a couple of miles away so will give them a try. Looked on the Bicycle Doctor website and they sell Treks which I am interested in. They also do 3 free services in the first year of ownership if you buy from them. I didnt realise that a bike would have to be serviced as much.

Dont compromise just because a different bike is available sooner. Get the bike U want . Personally I wouldnt buy any bike I hadnt test ridden.A bike that looks good and is well specced etc may just not feel right.

UPDATE: I went to another bike shop to have a look at the Speedster, but unfortunately it was still at the full price of £750. I also had a look at the Trek 1.2 which I was not really keen on. I rang Evans to get my £50 refund back on the bike they could not supply as they had sold the last one in the company. However, I also enquired as to why they were still showing the Speedster as in stock on their website. They said non were available so after speaking to the manager and after ringing round some of their stores, they 'miraculously' found one in a store down south. They are having it sent up to my local store for me to have a test ride of.

In the end, being persistent seems to have paid off.
