Notts County Council co-ordinate a series of guided rides called 'Rural Rides'.
Anyone can just turn up and ride - no fee, no registration.

All rides are led by volunteers, the Council just publicise them in a booklet that they print (Cheers to Pete Jarman of Notts CC!).

Short rides & longer rides, some leisurely, on and off-road...

I lead some of them, though mine aren't really suitable for beginners.

Most, but not all, start in Nottingham - usually mid morning on a weekend.
There are also some mid-week and evening rides

Order a booklet or find a PDF at http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/home/leisure/l-cycling/ruralrides.htm

Noted, cheers

Would it be REALLY bad of me to drive down to one of them?

I suppose I could do the train...

I do like the Nottinghamshire countryside, having lived there a short while

I had a quick look but not knowing the area I was thinking that a map might have helped to get an idea of where the start was and the direction of travel. (A general comment at the whole scheme not just your rides).

There should be a grid ref for each start point - copy & paste that into Google maps... (heck of a journey from Bristol tho' ;))

Mapping each ride would be a mammoth task!

Mr Tiger, I've had Sheffield rider on one of my rides before.

He and many others drive to the start - I purposely start some from Park 'n Ride sites.

See some of you soon!!

No I meant that a sort of general map just showing the start point and destination for all the rides, so that if someone didn't know the area they could look at ones that could be nearby.

As for me - I don't know the area but its in the direction of the in-laws (not quite the same area) so I was wondering about them if we were up staying with them.

There are lots of ridesstarting points Summerdays, starting at all different parts of the county and around the city.
Just a question of which ones are closestmost convenient by date and location for me.
I am assuming that the ending point would be near the start...

Yes, all the rides are 'circular'.
i.e. start and end at the same place...
Not just riding in circles

Jealous as hell..some of those rides are around old haunts for me, Sibthorpe, Gunthorpe, Lowdham, Hose, Muskham...i might have a look for a Sunday ride that'll fit in with my visits to Calverton and Bottesford carboots.
Dump the wife in Bingham for a few hours B)
