guard for chainring

ive built myself a tt bike on the cheap to compete in my local clubs tt
im running a single chainring with a 10 speed cassette
while tweeking the gears on small practice runs the chain as fallen of the chainring to the outside.
would a gaurd like this

It might just jam up.

I think you need to get it set up better, but with a 10 speed what is your chainline like?
