Hi

I've always previously just used a good squirt of GT85 to keep my chain/gears lubed. Is this sufficient or is it a bad idea?

Thanks

I'd use an actual chain lubricant. GT85 is a mix of solvent and lubricant. I'd rather keep the two separate. Solvent to clean the chain, lubricant to lube it after you've finished with the solvent.

You will get very mixed opinions on this and it's not what I use personally but if you apply it often enough, it should probably be okay.

Any particular lube you'd recommend or are they all much of a muchness? How often do you clean/lube your chain?

Sorry, newbie questions!!

Much of a muchness, except that there are 'dry' and 'wet' lubes. Dry is generally better in dry weather, wet in wet, but it's a seasonal thing not a day-to-day thing.
As to frequency, I'm not very religious about it, so 'when it looks like it needs it'.

Cool ta, I certainly wasn't aware there were wet and dry lubes so I've learnt something new :-) I'll pick something up next time I'm in the LBS. Just want to make sure everything's nice and smooth for London!!

Some use chain saw lube. Not sure about it and it depends on if you have it available I suppose but it's designed for lightweight fast moving chains. Still I reckon it's better than the hot dripping I saw on guy using in my youth !

I always liken GT85 to WD40. I've tried many methods over the years including very liberal and regular spraying the chain with WD. Everyone says its a no no...I just had to satisfy myself. It didn't work...quite the opposite, my chain wore excessively fast compared to every other method I'd used.
Based on that likeness between the two, personally I wouldn't use it on my chain, although ONE member on here does use WD quite successfully apparently.

Is this a record?!!!! We're eight posts in to a thread on chain care, and not one person has mentioned the Mickle method!

I don't know but I have some Halfrauds bike hut dry lube which is more synthetic teflon than real oil :/

The Mickle method seems to work for me!

I use halfords dry lube to lubricate the cleat bolts on my shoes, also used to lubricate the bolts securing the bottle cages, it has cured quite a few squeaks, however I use finish line wet lube on the chain.
