i have a GT Zum s2... i need to higher the handlebars they are way to low for me

I have undone the allen-bolt that is under the cap on the stem of the handlebars and i assumed that would free the lock/expander bolt so i could pull the bars up but no joy, i cant move them at all..

any tips? should i give the bolt a whack to free them?

I don't think that you can raise the bars that way as the height is fixed by the length of the steerer(the tube attached to the forks)- but what you need to do having undone the top and removed it is to undo the bolts on the stem, take the stem off and put another spacer on and then replace the stem, tighten the top nut and then tighten the stem bolts.

Otherwise the solutions include getting a new pair of forks with a longer steerer, getting an angled stem or getting a raiser.

It sounds to me as if the op has an "old style" stem - if so, yes, you must loosen the bolt and then give it a sharp blow to loosen the expander and the stem should come loose. If it's the "new style" system then follow accountantpete's advice.

Hmmmm - rereading the op, it seems more likely it's a new style system, so Don't Hit Anything With A Hammer.
