I've got a Merida RaceLite 900 (with Fulcrum Racing 5 wheels) which I use as my winter/bad weather bike. Its still got the original Shimano Sora 14-speed groupset, which I want to upgrade to something 22-speed so its more similar to my summer bike.

I've got my eye on a 105 groupset, but before I go down the route of buying I just wanted to check it will be compatible or if I'd need to buy any other extra bits? I am pretty sure I've been told the Racing 5 wheels are compatible with an 11-speed cassette - does this sound right?

Any advice would be appreciated!

According to their own site you'll need to swap out the freehub:
Can Fulcrum wheels with freewheel body at 9/10 speeds also be used an 11-speed groupset?
  1. Campagnolo: Yes, they can be used without any problem. The Fulcrum freewheel body has not been modified and is compatible with 9/10/11 speeds.
Shimano/SRAM: no, requires 11 speeds freewheel body.
Shifter, cables, rear mech, cassette and chain are the minimum on top of that [plus maybe a brake caliper if the cable pull is different enough to warrant it] if you're not obtaining a full groupset.

The full 105 groupset is actually quite affordable at the moment of around £300.

For me, buying lower spec frame and 105 separate was £100 cheaper than the 105 spec bike anyway.

Thanks for the responses guys.

One more (possibly stupid) question - the Groupset I'm looking to buy comes in three different versions differentiated by 170mm, 172.5mm and 175mm. What is that in relation too, and what is the right choice for me?

Thanks

The numbers refer to the length of the crank arm.

If you're happy with the fit of your current set up, then buy the same size. It should be stamped on one of the crank arms, but if not, grab a tape measure.

It is done centre of pedal axle to the centre of the crank arm.
