Almost decided on Condor bike, but it comes with a wide selection of groupsets.

At the low end is the Sora. Tiagra , costs an extra £50, 105 + £250 and Ultragra + £350.

however the bikes are also available with campagnolo Veloce is + £150, Centeur + £300.

Interesting break points across both ranges at £50, £150, £250, £300 and £350

I'm tempted by the 105 set but at a saving of £100 is the Veloce, which I've read good things about.

Anyone any views?

I'd go for 105, it is still compatible with Ultegra so if you choose to upgrade in the future then you can. Sora and Tiagra are 9 speed.

Failing that, if it is a bit of a stretch then Tiagra as it is very good, doesn't have that Sora thumb shifter, but you are tied to 9 speed.

As far as Campag are concerned, I thought the 10 speed gruppos were being phased out - however I don't have my finger on the pulse as my bike is Shimano equipped.

I was told that the campag stuf was all completely interchangeabe with the rest of the campag stuff, the same wasn't true o the Shimano stuff

and it was 10 speed rather than 9

so my humble Xenon bits can be slowly upgraded bit by bit

yeah right

Yes, by the time anyone writes a reply on an internet forum what they have typed has been rendered out of date by the manufacturers!

I put Tiagra as a minimum on my spec' list.

Tiagra 07 was a 9 cluster, and my LBS had one of the 'in cable' Dura Ace gear indicators from when D A was 9 speed, so my mind was made up.

If you go 10 speed, and want a gear indicator, you'll be having Flight Deck at upwards of 40 quid.

BUT, if you want kudos and cred, its Campag ErgoBrain ;)

Thanks guys.

Perhaps I should have checked first as there are already threads titled campo vs shamino.

The subject seems to bring out all sham vs campo purists. I'm actually not that bothered about being able to upgrade. I'd more likely buy a different type of bike than upgrade the components, but comes having had a good year on a trek based Tiagra.

One thing that still puzzles me is the double vs triple debate. I thought it was a simple as having two or three cogs on the front. Oh no, you can get different types of cassette giving different options.

The guy in the Condor shop produced a calculator to explain it all, but i quickly got lost.

I think he said selecting the right cassette would allow nearly as much choice on a double as with a treble. I'm not exactly expecting to take the bike up mountains so perhaps i don't need the 'granny' cog.

The current veloce seems to have a huge range of options.

Any advice about how to choose?

Well up to a point innit, I have Campag parts from four different decades on my hack and it works a treat.

Go with Veloce or 105. With the new shape Campag ergos, there probably isn't much difference in feel between contact points.

As has been pointed out, there is great interchangeability between components with Campag and while 10s will be phased out of the range in 2010/11, I can still buy 9s kit very easily (apart from ergos).
Not being a fan of the new shape ergos, I've bought some spare ones now just in case...

Campag 10 speed will indeed be phased out in favour of 11. However, the new Dura Ace with the concealed cables is not compatable with existing systems and that is bound to filter down through the rest of the range rendering the other current groupsets obsolete.

It is certain that both Shimano and Sram will feel bound to play catchup with Campag in the near future and also fit an extra cog at the back, particularly as FSA's proposed new groupset is also rumoured to be 11 speed.

Check this out...
Figure out the "Gear Inches" on your existing bike.... and in which gears you spend most of your time.
Then compare them with the double & triple set ups in the various groupset options you have on the new bike.
