I currently have 10 speed compact Tiagra on the commuter but am considering a change to SRAM (probably Apex as on the other bikes) having had a couple of moments recently where I have almost failed to brake satisfactorily on the brifters. I also have crosslevers but was travelling at speed on the hoods and grabbed at the levers. I simply don't seem to be able tp get enough leverage as the hoods are too big for my hands. The SRAM hoods on the carbon are slimmer and more ergonomic for me to brake from - no crosslevers but haven't needed them.

What would I need to change - everything - brakes, derailleur, front rings? Or could I get away with less? If I need to change everything, it would almost make sense for me to buy a new commuter bike with SRAM!

Cheers

You can retain the brakes, chain, cassette and front rings. The pull ratio on the mechs is different though. So new brifters and mechs.

Darn, less excuse for a new bike  That said, SRAM roadbikes suitable for commuting are quite few and far between!
