The 48-year-old man was going through a junction when his bicycle collided with a parked car in Greenock, Inverclyde.
The collision happened at around 4pm on Monday in Grieve Road in the town.
The man was taken to Inverclyde Royal Infirmary before being transferred to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.
Hospital staff describe his condition as critical.
Sergeant Kenny Malaney from the Road Policing Unit said: "Enquiries are continuing to establish the exact circumstances of this incident.
"I would ask anyone who witnessed what happened to contact police via the non-emergency number 101."
