greatest champion?

who do you regard as the greatest racing champion?
Mine is Jacques Anquetil from the 60's
He was the first to win 5 Tour de France, the first to win the Giro ad TDF in the same year, a great time trialist and a master at controlling races.

Sadly, he died of cancer in 1987, age 53.

Eddy is definately the top guy for most.

However for sheer entertainment purposes Cav on the sprint for many. The Professor is also a great. Even Lance for many. Some like the mountaineers, some the sprinters, some the yellow jersey.

During his peak years Merckx had a 35% win ratio. That is absolutely phenomenal in road cycling, no one else has even come close.

It's a choice of two for me.

Merckcx - obviously.

Coppi - incredible and the war robbed him of some of his best years. He was also, without question, the most elegant rider - pure class. His position on a bike is perfect.

Beryl Burton, not many men could beat her, in the 25 mile National Time Trial for instance she won it 26 times from 1958 - 1986 but only won the 50 TT 24 times and the 100 mile 18 times. Quite unbelievable.
