I'm generally a commuter to work, 12 miles in, 12 miles home but on a Gary Fisher 29-er moutain bike. Don't commute every day, legs don't hold out for more than 3 days. Have entered the above ride, unwillingly because I don't think I can do it, but would HATE to fail. Have got new saddle, new slicks on the way which bike-wise is all I can do. This ride is 72 miles in one day. Anyone doing it and anyone got any tips for how on earth I am going to get my arse over the finish line with any ounce of dignity?

Lock out the suspension if you can (it absorbs energy). Pump your tyres up so they feel firm but not solid. They are now your suspension so you want a little give, but you don't want to feel like you are riding through treacle.

Take your time so you don't burn yourself out.

Eat and drink little and often to keep your fluid and energy stores topped up.

See if you can find someone a bit fitter than you who is happy to ride at your pace and gently encourage you.

Unless you have a totally reliable forecast for the day, assume that the weather will be changeable and wear layered clothing so you can put extra on or take it off as conditions change. You don't want to overheat or get chilled.

Make sure that you are comfortable on your bike - 72 miles is far enough to give you all sorts of aches and pains if you are not.

Stand up from time to time to give your bum a break.

And finally - have a great ride!

I did it last year and a couple of times in years gone by. It's not too difficult a route and although it has a couple of proper climbs it is manageable by anyone with just a little preparation.

All what Colin just said. Maybe do a few weekend rides doing some extra miles each time.

Remember it isn't a race, go at whatever pace suits you. It is a brilliantly organised event. Good signage, marshals, and refreshments and best of all they bring you back to the start along with your bike.

I might enter again this year if I can be sure of being free.
