Great video shows just how easily carbon frames break

Interesting! Like I said on another thread I've got 20+ year old carbon fishing rods that are still in tip top shape and they have to bend and flex a lot! I know they are not bike frames and are under different stresses. Carbon bike frames really should be fine unless involved in a heavy fall, and even then judging by that vid, will probably still be ok! Nice to know.

That video was interesting -I've always been a bit reticent about CF bikes; I wonder about what happens if you break the surface of them (are they then shot?), or the fact that when they break, they really just break. However, from the video it seems like they are stronger than alu (assuming the alu vs cf frames are about equal and the same model).

Of course it's better not to be on a frame that breaks at all, and from that video that gives a nod to the cf frame.....

In my case, my £5k Scott Genius Ltd had a manufacturing fault. The only way, I was told by Scott, to know this was to have had the frame x-rayed. It had delaminated and snapped on me after 4 years - fractured wrists and eye socket and I was knocked unconscious. Luckily I was out with a MTB club run.

This happened just because I'd hit some boggy ground - had it happened during the earlier 8ft drop offs I may have not been so lucky.

So yes Carbon is an amazing material and I'm jealous that I can't get over my fear of the unknown (is my frame made wrong again) - I'd love to have a Carbon bike. But unfortunately only x-rays can tell you if your frame is okay dokey - tapping it and other such bollocks are old housewives tales. Straight out of a Scott reps mouth that nugget.

That's a pretty shocking story! Did Scott give you any compensation?

SO maybe should be retitled as Alu breaks more easily than CF.

What is told me is how tough CF is. Thanks
