i was looking for a rucksack type bag specifically for my laptop as not being able to commute to work when i had my laptop on a monday and friday was interfering with my training. but i wanted something slimline and light, as it's a very hilly commute, so i only wanted it for my laptop only, nothing else, because i didn't want to end up shoving loads of stuff in it (you know what us women are like) and then breaking my back over the hills! Anyway i found this and i ordered it.

http://www.laptopstuff.co.uk/p/Built_NY_Laptop_Backpack_.htm

the medium is big enough for my 16" laptop (i reckon you could get a 17" in). there is room for other stuff (but nothing too bulky... i'm talking pads or maybe the power lead) and there is a phone pocket in the handle.

There is a sternum strap but its designed so that you can fold it away if you don't want to use it. i don't like the sternum strap coz my lady lumps get in the way, but the bag stays snug on your back and doesn't slide around at all even without the strap. the handles are wide and just made of the neoprene stuff so its really comfortable.

i wasn't sure how waterproof it was so i "clingfilmed" my laptop tonight before i rode 23 miles home in the rain (and it rained all the way!). when i opened the bag back at home the laptop was dry. knowing me though i will probably still clingfilm the laptop just to be on the safeside.

anyway, it's dead comfy, there is a foam insert that sits between your back and the laptop to protect your back. even at the end of my 23 mile hilly commute there is nothing irritating about it and nothing is digging in my shoulders/collar bones/back, so i highly recommend it if you need to carry a laptop but haven't got panniers.

My immediate thought on reading the bumf was the 'proofness' or otherwise of its "Water and stain resistant" features as often resistant means will sustain a bucket of water being thrown at it but not left under a running tap for 10 mins, and we all know that rain is more like the latter.

The only concern I would have vis the cling-film is that if you do get water in the pack, there's a good chance of condensing on the inside of your clingfilm membrane. You might be better of buying a box of large reseaslable freezer bags with the zippers. This should cost you less than the cling-film in the long run.

BTW, I really like this design as I tend to take my laptop home each night but is there enough space to fit lunch-box (6x4x2)?
