Greasing Bearings - Wow

In the process of fitting some Marathon Plus tyres to Claude I stripped the front axle to find the grease on the bearings having the consistency of blu-tak and the colour of a footballers wife. A clean and some copper grease later and the front wheel spins for England

Now to get that pesky rear cassette off to do the same with the rear bearings and we are in business for faster road fun times!

Nice one but a word of caution, Copper grease is not the best for moving parts as it has fine particles in it. More for anti seize use than anything. A good lithium based grease is better here.

Really Vaseline? 8-|

Hmm good point about the copper grease, I shall endeavour to pick up some proper stuff at some point. Thanks.

Yep, Vaseline, cheap, works and is readily available. Been using it for over 30 years on all kinds of bikes, even my Ultegra road-hubs run on Vaseline.

Has anyone tried silicone grease for anything rotating. I use it as an anti-seize, but not lubrication.

I've using silicone spray to lubricate the chain on 3 bikes and I'm very happy with the results.

Got rid of the copper slip, Vaseline appears to work when applied liberally.

Also works on the bearings...

Cheers for the tips

Okay lets chuck the cat in with the pigeons then...........;)

On that basis , you could put baby oil (mineral based) into your hydraulic brakes. Assuming of course they don't require DOT fluids.
Personally though I wouldn't want to test them out going down the Ben Nevis Red route!
