Sounds like you had abit of play in the fork, did it click going over speed bumps ect if you have any around? Abit of grease on the spacers does no harm but I can't see it doing much good either

Have you tried standing over the bike holding both brakes and wiggling it to see if there is any play? That or if you lift the front wheel and bounce it off the floor you'll hear knocking or vibration

Deffo take it for a ride and see it may be anything from the crank, pedal, saddle creaks seem to echo from anywhere but the source on bikes!

I grease mine. The main issue is the pre-load spring washer, especially if you have an alloy steerer. It can get a little polished as well as the steerer (blackened) and this needs rubbing off with wire wool, then greasing. All gone.

Last time my bike made funny noises in the headset area, the headset needed replacing (only because I'd left it way too long to just clean and regrease its bearings). Perhaps your headset needs a bit of cleaning and regreasing?

You haven't got cable adjusters on the gear cables in front of the headset have you? Sometimes mine click together when the bars are turned.

No barrel adjusters but a good shout. It seemed to have disappeared on today's ride but no luck :-/ I think it could be the wheel bearings, they are lovely and smooth but there seems to be a bit of play in the hub which makes a click, the sound is like the noise I heard. I gave up  and dropped it into a lbs and they agreed with me. If it makes the same sound tomorrow with a different wheel, its not that
