I watched this yesterday and found the 34 year old's blast away from the others on the mountain with incredulity. Admittedly he wasn't up against Schleck or Dirty Bertie, but his awesome engine-fuelled-Cancellara like acceleration was a sight to behold in a journeyman cyclist. He was a minute up in no time and increased it over the next 7 km at ramps of 10%.

Possibly a couple of telling phrases in the cyclingnews report.

While on Oktos in 2003 he was prevented from racing the Driedaagse van West Vlaanderen when he came in over the hematocrit limit. His manager defended him, saying he had a naturally high hematocrit. However, in 2005, he was prevented from riding the world championship in Madrid after failing another blood test conducted by the UCI.

His allies during the last five stages might well be the teams of the sprinters. They form the majority of the peloton at the 48th Presidential Tour of Turkey and they'll work for bunch sprint finishes, but ProTeams and Pro Continental teams might as well combine forces to dethrone the leader of a Continental team not submitted to the biological passport.

You are just so suspicious of success Rich.
I know Adrian, it's one of my many failings!

Haterz gonna hate!

Seriously though, he'd dodgy as ****. And by riding for lower level teams - partly at least because the top outfits won't have him - he's been flying under the radar a long time. He'll no doubt have been tested after winning this stage, but he's probably experienced enough now to have done his microdosing properly or used the right masking agents.

Yeah, I watched that too on eurosport and it smelled a bit whiffy to me as well. I'd like to believe in an older journeyman doing well, but this was a little too much even for me. He's defiantly doped, but as Moneky above said, I doubt there will be any proof to be seen.

How long before we start seeing East Africans who've had a life time of natural altitude training winning mountain stages?

As soon as they get the proper equipment and training... even now potentially world-beating cyclists from Eritrea to Burundi are still using cobbled together bikes made from bits, and second-hand racing kit.

That win today by Kiesse was the most entertaining thing I have seen for ages. What a cool dude he was, took the fall and then fixed the chain, calmly, no flapping, no tantrums, and went on to still win the stage with the vipers head just metres behind him, brilliant !
