Hi All,

I'm a new road bike rider and wondered if anyone can give any advice on what GPS or cycle computer to buy mainly for training measurement and journey recording leading up to a sportive event in July?

Thanks

Do you want HR and cadence data? Do you need extensive mapping capabilities?

Hi Rob, thanks for your reply. As a bonus yes HR, cadence and mapping would be good, but I can live without those. A normal cycle computer may be suitable for what I initially need.

Edge 200 but if you find a good deal get the 500 which allows you to have the HR and cadence (this is on the assumption you don't want/need navigation)

When I decided to upgrade from my Cateye to a GPS device my route was to go for the Garmin Edge 500 because I didn't need mapping. The 500 does also offer a crumb trail option for pre-loaded routes however which is easy(ish) to follow.

I got a very good deal on the unit without HR and cadence but am planning to get these in future which is why I ruled out the Edge 200 as it's not compatible with these features.

The Edge 800 was far more expensive than I wanted to pay and mapping was not a priority for commutes and club rides - my touring partner has a 705 which we've found fine, although I have no idea if we'll ever tour again given that he's now tied the knot and got a bun in the oven.

There are new units now available (Edge 810 and 510) but I haven't tried them and not heard the best reports. These Garmin devices tend to improve with age and firmware updates.

In between here and there
Not sure if this helps but I really regret not getting one that uploads to all the main sites when I first started out riding my bike. So as a bare min would get one that you could do that with. Also the Garmin's have pretty good resale values so if you find you give up on cycling and or don't find it much use you should get a large chunk of your money back
