I've done it a couple of times. Once at the High Court and once at the Sheriff Court. IMO it was a total waste of my time. Its all very well doing your civic duty but the whole process was an eye-opener with regards to the akwardness of the legal system. As for doing an inquest - you could be there for weeks:ohmy:

If it runs as smoothly as the Scottish legal system I would follow fossyant's advice and take a plentiful supply of reading material. I have the pleasure of attending various courts around Scotland as a police witness. The inefficiency has to be seen to be believed!!!

Have never sat on a jury, but I would do so if asked. I always hope if I do get the nod it'll be like "Twelve Angry Men". Somehow I think reality might be different!

I did it 10 yrs back and found it very valuable and fulfilling. Honestly

Two lads accused of 16 accused of robbery at knifepoint at the flat of a mate. What was most fascinating was the range of opinion in the jury room, with one middle aged Daily Mail reader starting up with "well, if two 16 yr olds are out after midnight they must be up to no good" and getting funny looks from the rest of us. Others had odd views too, but the overall balance of views seemed fair and refreshing.

As it happens they were guilty as hell because they changed their plea half way through!

Jury service...is it as much fun as one of those hotel whodunnit 'murder mystery' weekends?

I did a high court trial, it was just getting interesting when the defendants absconded...

but there is a lot of sitting around waiting to get called into court, and no one tells the jury what is going on...

I'd love to do Jury service... but never been asked.
Right now at work it would be a great time to do it... would do anything for a few days out doing something else!

It sounds like you have been called up to the inquest jury duty ... bear in mind it doesn't follow exactly all the same rules as the normal jury duty... for example you can be called up again for the normal jury duty and it doesn't count as having done it in the last x months. And I can't remember what the other differences were.

I was called up several times to do it ... each time I had the same excuse ... they didn't pay child care, and they expected me to get to it for 9 ?9.30 each morning by bus (that would be 2 bus into and out of town after dropping kids at school). I didn't cycle at the time ... now I could do it easily by bike.

i couldn't get away with that, as the court is 5 minutes walk across town.
