I got back on my bike on the road after two weeks following a shoulder decompression. Just local 20-30 miles like, whilst off sick. No problem.
Was 7 weeks till I did the commute on the bike though - back at work after 5 weeks. 2 weeks on the bus were a mare. 
It's scary, and you'll think you'll break things, but the harder you work, with medical advice, the quicker you will get back !
