Well, I picked up the new bike today. Got it in the car, with a little help from the shop man. Got it home and had a little go on it, just round the estate where I live. So far so good, haven't fallen off, and managed to not clunk through the gears.

I'm afraid, it's a raleigh step through hybrid, (I know alot of people don't think much of them) as I'm not planning on going up any really rough tracks, only on the road, and some well laid trails or cycle paths, and more importantly, I don't have a lot of flexibility in my legs, so I can't get my leg over a higher bar. (up and downs alright, but it's the sideways bit thats difficult.)

The seats quite low, I can put my feet almost flat on the floor, I think I ought to raise it a little bit, but not too much as I'm not yet really confident on it.

Haven't managed to get a helmet yet, I really don't want to go very far without one, I assume it's a must? There's so many, I don't know where to start with them.

Is there anything else I must have? Can i go along the local paths in just normal clothes, or do I have to spend some money on special stuff?

The helmet is not an essential piece of equipment. There is no legislation forcing you to wear one so it comes down to personal choice.

I don't wear one for most of my on road riding and wear one for most of my off road riding.

If you decide that you must have one you need to make sure that it is a snug comfortable fit when the straps are correctly tensioned. Try a cycle shop with a wide range of helmets and chose one that fits well, appeals to your vanity and is affordable.

I'd learn how to repair punctures and make sure that you have a puncture outfit and tyre levers with you every time you take the bike out.

I'd keep a very close eye on the Aldi web site to spot when they have their winter cycling wear on sale. You'll be able to get decent gloves, jackets and winter riding shirts for decent prices that are way below the stuff on sale in bike shops.

Decent cycle wear will help to keep you dry and at an appropriate temperature as winter moves closer.
