With my current purchase of a GIANT SCR2 (second hand). I`m looking for a wheel upgrade as these are the weak point in the overall package. Any recommendations? Nothing to expensive, is there anything in the £100 to £150 worth buying or is it no better than the Alex DA22 fitted already?

I replaced some similar wheels on my old Allez with Open sport rims on 105 hubs, cost a bit more than £150 though. While a fairly basic wheel they were much better for general riding since they were a bit more flexible in the uppy-downy direction and a bit stiffer in the lefty-righty sense (the Alex rims were a sort of shallow V-section and the Mavics have a flatter sort of profile, plus more spokes). I found they made a great difference in general feel and comfort, but there was probably little difference in performance.

Still got those wheels, put them on my 'cross bike.

Spa Cycles is worth a look for budget handbuilts.

What is wrong with the existing wheels? IMO these minor improvements in a bikes ride aren't worth the money for the average rider. If the wheels are wrecked then by all means replace with something better but if the are working ok now then ride'em till they die!

I found the difference was more than minor in my case, I was rather surprised. I did ride the Alexes until they died too, they went on the commuter until the front started popping spokes and the rear had barely any rim left, the rear was given to someone to use as a turbo training wheel- they even gave me money for it (not that I asked). Boy, I really love wearing stuff out.
