Taken on a wee challenge, Glasgow to Edinburgh sportive 110 mile cycling in September. I've never cycled more than 56 miles so I'm in need of a good training plan, :training: any ideas?

Just ride your bike as often as you can!

It's still a long way off so gently increase your mileage and frequency and you should have no problem.

Good luck

Try riding the same route or 100 mile equivalent ... A month before hand !
Good luck ....
Is that it?

I know there will be other along soon to offer advice but I would get out 3 times a week and for a short 25 or so and use a 4th ride each week or one of the 3th for endurance adding 10% to it each week. Lose some weight if you feel you need to, and keep smiling at all times.

Building from 56 to 110 miles shouldn't be an issue (providing you've time and no serious health issues). As screenman writes, increasing the distance gradually is a sensible strategy, aiming to complete a 100 mile ride a couple of weeks prior to the event. As you've a full 6 months to train, this could be a leisurely training plan using increments of 10 miles or so a month.

Thanks for the sound advice. As soon as the weather improves I'll get out there and start my training, :bicycle:and for sure look up the British cycling sportive cycling plans. Many thanks guys

Approaching perfection from a distance.
How about joining a local cycling club. As the weather improves they'll regularly be having club runs of 50-80 miles at the week-ends. So much easier to do long miles in a group. By September you'd be flying!

Make sure your saddle is comfortable for long rides. My undercarriage found 70 to 100 miles a big jump! Much more so than the rest of me

You have 7 months.... just ride your bike regularly and you won't have a problem! It is not like it is tomorrow (although you could probably complete it tomorrow, if you took your time, it wouldn't be quite so enjoyable though).

If you just want to complete the distance I'm sure you will be fine with a plan, it's worth reading up on the route - I've not done it but understand it's a bit hilly, perhaps even aim to cycle part of it as part of your plan.

As you are in Cumbernauld I'm sure @Pat "5mph" has already been in touch regarding her Belles on Bikes group - if not you might consider going out with them and/or join in on the CC Ecosse rides being mentioned in the Informal rides section - joining a club is also another good suggestion for upping your distance/speed.

Good luck! Regards, Mark
