good route from London to Horsham?

Does anyone know a good route from central London to Horsham? I'm thinking about cycling there next Saturday to see friends. I don't mind fairly busy roads but I'm guessing taking the A24 the whole way there might be a bit reckless. . . . any advice would be great.

Thanks

You could get the train to Guilford and follow the South Down Way .

You may care to try the following or some variant:
  • train ( Vic or Waterloo or Clapham Jnctn) to Epsom
  • ride to Headley via Epsom Downs
  • to Betchworth, Newdigate, Rusper, Horsham following unclassified roads that run more or less parallel to the A24
This is such a good route that I am tempted to do it myself; if you can make an earlish start I will be happy to have company before I peel off back to the N Downs.

Don't know about 'good' but the last time I did it the other way (Horsham to London) was at the end of a DIY200 Audax. It was 6pm-ish and I was just interested into getting back to SW15 as soon as possible. My route (going North) was:-

Horsham, Rusper, Newdigate, edge of Leigh, Betchworth (and up!), past Walton Heath Golf Club and then the A217 all the way to the turn off for Morden.

If you can find a route to Walton Heath then it's mainly downhill from there if you go South via Betchworth, etc.

What part of London are you starting from? Personally I don't mind the A24 out of London, it's one of the nicer exit routes being quite wide and not too busy (compared to something like the A3).

ooh company could be good - as long as you don't mind me being a bit slow and asthmatic on inclines! I haven't got a definite plan with my mates yet but I don't mind starting earlish. . . . I'll keep you posted.

Becs, don't worry about pace - I am planning a longish ride on Saturday so a gentle start will be necessary. As for earlish, I had in mind leavng Epsom 0900 -1000. Any other punters?

are you based in London? I've just been sent a route from central london, 40 miles ish. If not Epsom is fine by me - as long as my cold shifts and it's not p*ssing it down!

Yes, Fulham so I am v close to the logical/ natural Thames crossing at Putney Bridge. If you want to meet there or therabouts at 0900ish that is fine by me.
