Good places for s/h bikes

Im starting to think I would like to do some road biking alongside the offroad stuff, but dont want to spend a fortune on a bike that might not get used.

So, the idea of a second hand bike seems good to me. Does anyone have any pointers in where to look for these, and also what to look for and what to avoid?

I've asked at both my LBSs, got GumTree, Freecycle and eBay bookmarked and checked regularly...

Any other ideas?

Don't forget size, budget etc.
