Hi all

Am new here so will quickly introduce myself -- or explain what got me here. After 7 years without a bike I went on a trip to Eastern Europe recently, rented a bike for a few days, made a few 5-6 hour tours on it, and ... absolutely loved it. Being Dutch (though having lived in the UK for nearly 10 years -- time really flies!) it brought back to me that feeling of freedom that my bikes used to give me when I still lived in Holland. So now I want one again.

I'm looking at road bikes or possibly cyclo-cross as I'll want to use it primarily to get fitter, and also for some light touring (day trips or perhaps slightly longer than that -- I know how to travel light and speed is so important to me that I don't want an audax/touring type bike). Been looking mainly at Kona, Spesh, Marin, but also quite tempted by Bianchi and Wilier. My budget is £800-1000, but for something as sexy as a Mortirolo Mirage I might work up the Dutch courage to fork out a few hundred more  (especially since I'd then have a decent basis to upgrade). But my ultimate choice isn't what this post is about (there will doubtless be others devoted to precisely that ) -- and will depend on some test drives anyway.

What I'd like to know at this stage is whether anyone can recommend some good LBSs in the Liverpool area. (I've checked the Recommended LBS thread but couldn't find very much.) The closest two stores that I've found with bikes I'm considering are:

Abbey Cycles (Liverpool)
Quinns Bike Centre (Liverpool)

Slightly further afield:

Cycle Surgery (Wirral -- I know, Liverpool really, but try saying that to the locals!!)
Cyclehouse (Warrington)
Formby Cycles (Well, the name kinda gives it away, Formby)
Specialized Concept Store (Chester)
Bike Factory (Chester)
The Edge Cycleworks (Chester / Lancaster -- gets the nod in the Rec LBS thread; shame the website isn't up 'n' running at the mo...)

Oh, and then there's Evans in Manchester (2x), but I don't hear too many positive noises about them in this forum...

If anyone has had any experience with any of these, I'd be grateful to get your thoughts, as I'll likely be dealing with them for quite a few years! Also, any reliable stores I may have omitted, do please lemmeknow.

I'm no expert in cycle shops around Liverpool, but you could also try Leisure Lakes nr Southport and Buyabike nr Chorley.
I love cycling in Holland. I go over for a few days every couple of months and really want to move over there! You must be mad moving from NL to Liverpool lol  Only kidding Liverpool is great too!

Quinns are very good. They've been there for years & got a very good reputation.

I know loads of people who just come to Liverpool to get a "Quinns Service" 'cos they're so good at when they do.

There's also Picton Cycles (www.pictoncycles.co.uk) bit of an "older" style shop that does some very good bikes.

Which part of Liverpool are you in & how far do you want to travel ?

In St Helens - nice people, lovely, cluttered, untidy shop - just like a LBS should be. However, I think they have moved alot into internet sales with www.bikesyoulike.co.uk (the other url seems to redirect there now).

I haven't been for a couple of years now.

Andrew

I'll second that - pretty decent shop.

Though if you looking for a basic bike a make of mine runs a good shop here:

Formby Cycles in err, Formby stock a wide range of brands. Willier, Colnago, Litespeed, Specialized etc etc.
Quinns has been going for years and definitely worth a visit.
And Wirral is definitely not in Liverpool, no more than Middlesborough is in Newcastle.

Good luck.

The Wirral is a principality all to itself - you know; a bit like monaco

In Liverpool itself I can highly recommend Picton Cycles (Wavertree Road) - not a great range, but dedicated cyclists themselves and always helpful - and Quinns - good range, helpful but a sales-force on %...

Abbey Cycles is closed isn't it?

Abbey Cycles is closed isn't it?

Abbey Cycles is still open & is OK(ish), The guy who runs it now is an ex Halfords man & not as good as the previous incumbent.

Quinns have been going for years & they guy who used to own Abbey Cycles now works there. They are very good at advice & never pressure you into anything. The shop is very large & they've got quite a range of Trek & Specialized.

Picton Cycles are very good. When I bought my Super Galaxy, they were very good at advice & set everything up perfectly. They give lots of advice, so they may be a good place to start.

So it probably the following order :-

1. Picton Cycles.
2. Quinns
3 Abbey Cycles (if you must).
