I can't recommend from experience as I haven't got my bike yet, but friends recommend Herne Hill Bikes. What about Brixton Cycles as well? They are supposed to be good.

I have only ever been into Brixton Cycles once. They didn't have the spring I needed but had a chat to the guy who was very helpful and I got good vibes in the shop. It was like a proper buzzing workshop, not a boutique for bikes feeling that you get in certain LBS!

Apex Cycles on Clapham High St are good too - even if they don't touch Campag hubs!

DeVer is pretty good but they're getting a bit expensive. I got a good deal from them when I bought my Sirrus a couple of years ago but the full service charge is now £80. I'll still use them when something complicated comes up but on the whole I look after the bike myself.

true their website did have a quietly cocky smell of expense

£80 ain't that steep for a full service is it?

I was impressed with the customer service at DeVer. Recently inquired about a £20 handlebar. They spent a fair bit of time making sure I had the right one. Prices seemed to be the going rate.

Bigfoot Bikes (even further sarf of the river! - in Hayes) are good too.

Not exactly ideal for you but there are a few good ones in the Fulham/Putney area:

mendabike
putney cycles
holdsworths

I went into SBR in fulham and the people just ignored me which was stupid, I was about to make a £700+ decision, and they just obviously wrote me off because I didn't jog in dressed in lycra, didn't even say hello. Their loss. I rang the office to complain.
