Just before Xmas I treated myself to a Park PCS9 workstand and finally got to use it in earnest today.

And what a wonderful thing it is - makes life so much easier.

Today's jobs:

Adjust front and rear mech's. The front was occasionally over shifting when changing down and the rear was rattling slightly before changing up the cassette every now and again. Set them up from scratch and they seem spot-on now but it was so easy carrying out the adjustments at a comfortable height without having to crouch down etc.

Sort out squealing front brakes. I have TRP CX9's and whilst they are very powerful the front has been wailing like a banshee. Way back in the past it has taken me ages to adjust brakes whilst balancing the bike and trying to tighten nuts etc at the same time. Much, much easier with the stand. Managed to sort the brakes too. Flat to rim did not work, toe-in did not work but toe-out did. Not a noise on the very steep hill where I live.

And, finally, deal with the weird rythmic scrape from the rear brake/rim when braking. This was caused by little blobs of alloy on the rim, very tiny but the noise they produce is pretty loud. Anyone know what causes these? Managed to sand them off with a very fine 'nib remover' used in car bodyshops. Sorted.

Quite chuffed with my efforts and very pleased with my workstand.

Nice one.
Just goes to show how good and useful a proper bike stand is.

I try fettling with mine on a hoist...is a real pain in the backside tbh as I didn't leave enough room on one side to get round the bike fully...doh!!! Next fettling job is the hoist...then maybe the bikes!!!

Brake update - thought they had shut up but on a very long descent at a constant pressure the damn things started howling albeit not as loud as before.

So......I ordered some of the new (ish) Koolstop Dura 2 Salmons and try as I might I cannot get them to make a noise - so it looks like the problem is solved!

Nice pads these as they do not have the snowplough tip of the previous Dura's. This means I can use them flat on the rims which is what my TRP's were designed for.

Funny how such small things can make life so much better!

I fitted koolstops to my road bike last night and adjusted the brakes. Tonight I have fixed (I hope ) the puncture on the hybrid and replaced the bell.

I finally have everything I ordered for my drop bar bike. New cassette, chain, bar tape, tires, saddle. My brake pads looked ok. I even bought a K-Edge mount for my Garmin, that was a hard pill to swallow with the price they charge for those things, but it did look like it would position it a little better than the others.

Rain and cold for today and rain tomorrow, I have two good days of fettling to do now. I am looking forward to it.

I don't have room in my flat for a work stand unless I say bugger off to any visitors who want to stay and take out the beds in the spare room, so just have two ceiling hooks. Might get a wall mounted workshop arm if I can work out where to put it.

Good idea, one of those things you promise to buy yourself but never get around to. Must get one. I will have to buy just the arm and get the guys here to weld up a stand for it.
