(Apologies if this is in the wrong section)

Evening,

I recently purchased a Specialized Crosstrail Sport 2015 Hybrid bike within the cycle to work scheme.
I wanted a quality-ish(so I thought) bike, as I had read reviews about this and watched videos I thought this would be the right bike for me as I wanted a bit of road and footpath-ed rigid riding.

Unfortunately, only after TWO weeks of having the bike, and only really doing at max around 12 miles a day for i'd say 6 days in total. I was riding along ( I've googled and know about the J.R.A comment =P) and came across a squeek noise. I stopped and checked it out, as I'm a new rider i thought nothing of it and carried on as I couldn't see nothing physically wrong with the bike, I also had my partners dad behind me on his bike and he checked it out for me as hes a more experienced rider.

Anyways,

Basically when I was riding my bike locked up and it turned out my rear derailleur and mech had completely snapped off the hangar. causing this to lock my bike up and I couldnt do anything.

Ive heard off people and two cycle shops that the Hangar is mean to snap off to prevent it damaging your frame. But I'm just Pee'd off that it has happened two weeks from having my brand new £600!!!! bike.

My main question is this,

Would you consider this to be under warranty?

The shop has said it's down to accidental damage, but i cannot see where i have accidently damaged it doing anything wrong apart from cycling like you should?

Please could anyone share their views on this.

Sorry it's long winded and I probably could of shortened this to one sentence but I'm being charged and wanted a rant!

Thanks

P.S below is the spec of the bike

Id go back - it shouldn't break that soon, but you do have to be wary of noises from the rear end. How much crap had it picked up in those two weeks - had it been cleaned. You'd expect to clean an off road bike down after a mucky ride - mud gets everywhere.

Any sign of the mech catching the spokes?

What happened as the rear end locked up ?

The new Alivio shadow looks more MTB than the older Alivio - which is on my wife's bike. I don't like the plastic on the missus mech, but it works fine.

Thanks for the quick response!

I have taken it back, but I've stupidly paid for the parts for it to be repaired! I knew I should of got other peoples professional opinion before I took it back .

It had't picked up much dirt tbh, I've just seen you're from south Manchester, So if you know the Crosby beach cycle path through formby woods and on the coastal road to southport? That's all i did.

When it locked up, my partners dad who was behind me said he just seen it ping off. then i obviously couldn't cycle because it took the chain off too. So i had to take the back wheel off to get the chain off and so I could push the bike home.

As I mentioned I did take it to another cycle shop, and he told me that the Back wheel had Buckled and that it needed a new plate? on the wheel.

Sorry I'm a new rider and WAS hoping to be getting some training in for a Blackpool to Liverpool ride but this will put me Back.

I'd say overshifted and caught the spokes. Which shattered the mech hanger. Saving grace is the mech is about £25 and a hanger should be £15 max.

Most likely poor adjustment of the mech limiter screws, the shop should have checked. Big question - which retailer - if it's a biggy, they don't check, just put bars and pedals on.

Difficult to say as the shop never knows the use of the bike.

I don't know where you are riding but it sounds like a coastal path, not a Red/Black route MTB trail.

Yeah they're charging me £51 to fit the parts.

I'm guessing from your answer this wouldn't as theyve stated be covered in the warranty?

Retailer is Formby Cycles, It's a independent shop.

Hi mate sorry to about your mishap I've just had the Specialized Crosstrail Comp through the C2W scheme nearly 2 wks ago. I had it delivered but had built and checked over by Leicester Halfords branch (as recommended by seasoned cyclist/work mate)to have the 3 yr service plan as not got a clue about the mechanics of a bike! But will be checking mine out tomorrow and keeping good listen out for any suspicious noises. Thanks for the heads up and pleased it wasn't too costly for ya! Good luck with Blackpool to Liverpool ride :-)

Hi. Thanks for your reply. Hope you have better luck!

It's a great bike maybe I've just had some bad luck.

You mention the 3 year service plan? Did you order it from elsewhere than Halfords but took out the plan with Halfords?

Might be worthwhile doing that then, do you mind me asking how much that is?

I have a 6 week service with my current retailer but after that I think I'll be looking elsewhere.

Thanks

Hi mate
Yes I bought from CycleUK via C2W scheme but real newbie with bikes so spoke to a few work mates and he got bike ride buddy who works at Halfords. I paid £40 to have it built/check and £60 for 3 yr service plan. Obviously they've got to check bike over before you purchase the plan so I thought just let them build it for me! I know what some people feel about Halfords within cycling community but I can only go by my experience and mates recommendation gives me peace of mind I've got back up. If I was you I'd ask around here and someone local to you might be able to recommend LBS or even Halfords in your area hope this helps mate good luck!

The warranty could cover it. If not, the LBS may do a replacement as a good will gesture. The only fly in the ointment could be that the argument may be, that someone parking their bike next to yours, may have caused the issue, you couldn't have known that, but they may say it's not their problem, likewise your RD could have been hit by an object, flicked up off of the road, you may not have thought anything of it, but again, they could argue, that's not their problem either. Personally, if I was the LBS, and the warranty route had failed, I'd do the replacement, as a good will gesture.

Loch side.
That is not a warrantee repair. A hanger doesn't give away with age but with sudden overload. I've seen plenty of breaks like that and each and every one of them is due to a bothched shift. Perhaps the first bad shift didn't break the camel's back, but repeated use thereafter did. Soak up the cost, fix it, have someone show you how to shift gears and write it off to school fees.

Do not touch suspicious objects
A bad shift? It's a two-week old bike and bits are snapping off already! Either they supplied faulty parts or they did not set the bike up properly. If the shop I got it from even hinted at me paying a penny for repairs I'd go for a full refund of the whole thing, take my custom elsewhere and never return. I'd also let Trading Standards know that the shop is attempting to skirt their legal duties under the SOGA.
