Hi Folks!

Any ideas about the best bike rack to take two adult bikes on the back of my freelander 4x4?

I have seen the ones that hang over the spare wheel, these look like a tidy option?!?!?

Also i have never driven with anything hanging off the back of my car so any thoughts there would be helpful.

let me know what you all think!
cheers

Hi Olly

I have one of the Halfords over the spare wheel racks. It lasted me well and took two heavy kids MTBs with ease (total recommended weight 30kg)
You don't really notice them hanging off the back of the car after the first couple of trips, but as with any bike rack, you have to remember they're there!
,
I don't need it any more, so if you want to PM me you are welcome to discuss how I can get it to you for a sum considerably less than the 80 quid Halfords are asking for them!

Check that LR don't place a weight limit on what can be carried that way. Can strain rear door hinges or the wheel bracket mounts.

You'll maybe need a rear light board if the bikes obscure any of the lights too, get the one without the red triangles, ones with red triangles are technically trailer boards (not that I knew that until a couple of weeks ago!!).

If you do need a light board, then you'll need the appropriate socket/towing electrics, and that will add £40-60 to the costs.

I have one of the Hollywood racks on my FL which has served me well and carries two bikes securely. No probs with the rear door. Nor are the lights obscured sufficiently to render them illegal. The number plate is obscured, so I display a second rear plate in the back window. You'll get a non-endorsable fixed penalty if the police decide they can't read your plate.

Isn't any obstruction of the lights enough to render the rack illegal without a light board though?

Have you got a towbar? If so, Maxxraxx are very good. They do two 4x4-fit models, one which is specifically for Landies. They are expensive but very well built and secure.
As for driving with things hangin off the back, you won't even notice any difference.

Hi Olly,
Am new to this 2 wheeled wonder but living in an area with hills i would like to drive to flatter areas to begin with and work my way up to the hills. i have a 4x4 and do you still have the halfords bike mount for grabs and if so how much?

Cubist,
do you still have the bike rack and if so what would be a reasonable price for the item?
