So, I'm warming to the idea of clipless riding - I have invested in a pair of cycling shoes (THESE), just need the cleats and pedals. Any recommendations for suitable gear that won't break the bank?

Certainly a good price. as for pedals, you are limited to pedals that are compatable to the fixings on the soles of the shoes. In this case look or shimano road pedals will fit and as these are two of the major types so you will have plenty of choice.
Assuming you are looking for a bargin, I have seen chain reaction are doing a pair of shimano r540 pedals for £25

It's probably obvious to most, but when I bought my first shoes and pedals I made a big boo boo. Not knowing anything about SPDs or clipless, I went into Halfords (thats the first boo boo) and was sold MTB shoes with Road pedals. Spent most of my afternoon working out why they wouldn't go together.

As long as you don't make that mistake, you'l be fine!!!!!

Shimano have some cheaper options. Look for pedals and cleats called spd_sl. The Look range start at a slightly higher price point, but the entry pedals are a lot lighter. Alternatively you can get Look style/copy pedals such as Outland Keos (made by Raleigh) which are much cheaper and let you see if you like being clipped in at a more affordable price. If you go down the Look route Keo's and Delta cleats and pedals are not compatible.

Thanks for the suggestions.

SPD's and cleats are in the post - South londoners may wish to break out their cameras at the weekend for amusing footage of a man falling onto trees/parked cars/peds/pavements etc etc

He he. I had my first 'woopsie' today. deciding whether to negotiate a cattle grid or not.

Couldn't (didn't) unclip. comedy topple onto side of cycle path.

"why is it that there is always somebody walking towards you when you fall over?"

Even their dog took a wide birth! I also 'walked' over the cattle grid

Sum total: grazed knee, damage to handlebar tape. funny story to tell!

If you bought spd sl pedals you will be ok. If you ordered spd pedals as you say, they will not be compatable with your shoes.
Based on what i can see from your photo .
