I have been using toe clips for a while but am considering being brave  and going for clipless pedals.

I have got Shimano cycle shoes which seem to have a recess in the sole of them for putting the cleats into.

My question is what do I need to get, obviously the pedals but what do I need for the shoes? Do you need to get specific makes of cleats?

I have a hybrid bike if that makes any difference.

I think in most cases the cleats will come with whatever pedal you decide to get.

Just make sure the pedals match your shoes - if you have a hybrid, I suspect you would have ended up with spd shoes, i.e. you need spd pedals. The Shimano m520's are are great budget starter option... (And yes, the cleats should come with the pedals)

And yes, go for it - it's far less scary than it seems!

You need to think about what you use your bike for? If it's going to the shops ect you want shoes that have grip on the bottom. You'd be best of with spd cleats that sit in a recess on the base of the shoe, how ever if you use it for fitness and mile crunching then I would suggest LOOK cleats as they give less pressure point pain on your feet, but are a bugger to walk in when not in the saddle. I recently went clipless with LOOK and I think there fantastic I wouldn't go back now!
