When I cycle in cold weather my eyes water so badly that I can hardly see. I'd like to get some goggles, but I wear glasses, so I'm not sure whether goggles will fit over the top. Also, there could be a problem with steaming up, which would make everything worse.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I don't (yet!) need glasses so don't have any direct experience. However I usually use clear safety glasses when cycling e.g. Bolle safety glasses. These are much cheaper (~£5) than "cycling specific" eyewear and seem to work very well. There are also similar safety goggles available that look as if they will fit over glasses and might be worth a try. eBay or building/DIY suppliers are probably the best sources.

Hi, if the route you want to go down are goggles, MX goggles from Scott, Oakley etc, make ones too fit over glasses.....

Using a drop of washing up liquid and rubbing into the inside lens with a tissue works as good as any anti-fog spray...cheaper too.

When I wanted prescription swimming goggles I was pleasantly surprised to find they were only about £20; I was expecting to pay much more as specialist eyewear.

It may be worth you looking either to your optician or if you know your current prescription, a good sports eyewear supplier on-line.

Post here if you find something as I would consider this option as well as I find cycling in windy / cold weather makes my eyes run also and scratches my lenses over time.

I also have a ptergium (look it up) in my left eye which I am told was caused by being outside in windy conditions.

After a few years of cycling using my regular glasses I bought some prescription cycling glasses, I got mine from my optician but there are cheaper places to get them from.

As you suggest goggles that fit right over your glasses would probably fog up quickly in practice- although I haven't actually tried it.

This subject has come up before- here

Ordinary glasses stand too far from the eyes, so air gets behind them and when that air is cold your eyes will water.

I assume your prescription is such that you can't ride without correction, in which case why not try a pair of prescription wrap around cycling glasses? They are close fitting enough to avoid cold air getting round your eyes but with just enough clearance not to steam up.

Lots of us use Optilabs www.optilabs.com although there are several other suppliers. Whoever you use, I would think that is a far better solution than ordinary glasses inside something else.

Thanks

Thanks for all your suggestions. My prescription is complex, and normal glasses are expensive, so I don't think I'll go for prescription goggles or cycling glasses. But I like the idea of skiing or safety goggles over my normal glasses. I'll see what I can get.

I suppose if I solve the problem I'll have no excuse and will have to venture out into this bitterly cold weather.

Ask at your local opticians for the nearest back street repair lab where they send repairs when they haven't succeeded in conning the customer into buying a new frame. Go along and chat up the technician, take some biscuits along for his tea breaks. Get him to give you an unwanted pair of sports type glasses he's got lying around then get him to glaze them to your prescription.

Got myself a pair of Benetton wrap-around ish styled glasses for £50 by doing this. They protect my eyes perfectly and save the very expensive frameless varifocals I wear normally from damage.
