Not sure if this previously been mentioned here or anywhere else on CC of Gino Bartali's efforts other than in winning the Giro several times and two Tour de France wins 1938 and 1948, but in case it hasn't, it's definitely worth a mention as it is doubly awesome if true. A totally different time, a different world.

It's a well known story I think, but maybe only by those who have an interest in pro racing of old; good to see that it's getting some attention. Road to Valour is a good read if you want to learn more about Bartali.
