Can you link to the two bikes in question please.

My 2010 Roam was £450 i think, but the specs have changed somewhat.

Im guessing you're looking at Roam 2 vs Roam 3, theres quite a few other differences, quality of components, number of gears and importantly the 2 has a lockout on the front suspension, doesnt look like the 3 does.

Have a look at the specialized crosstrail too, when youre looking for offers, theyre incredibly similar.
