Just ordered my new bike, the Giant Roam XR2 http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-gb/bikes/model/roam.xr.2/7860/45494/ . Should be ready in two days.

I already have an entry level MTB so this a significant upgrade in price and felt great on my test ride. I realise the components are gonna be better on my new bike and I've gone from MTB to Hybrid/Crosstrail type bike but I was just wondering what the numbers on the crankset mean.

My old MTB crankset spec is - 42/34/24.
The Giant cranket spec is - 26/36/48.

Please can someone tell me what these numbers mean and if/how they affect the ride.

Thanks
Ed.

The numbers are how many teeth are on each of the chainrings. More teeth mean larger gears ie. more speed, less hill climbing ability. In practice you'll find that the 48 tooth big ring will mean you'll go faster on the Giant before 'spinning out'. And although the small ring is a 26 tooth, 2 more than your old mtb, with the 11-34 cassette there are still enough low gears to climb pretty much anything other than vertical walls. I'm sure you'll love it. Looks like a cracking bike.

Cheers mate.. It all makes sense now.

Looking forward to picking it up tomorrow hopefully. I've got the afternoon free so fingers crossed, no delays and mild weather :bicycle:
