I crashed my bike last weekend and damaged a few bits & pieces. Everything else is fixed or replaced but I've just discovered this damage to the display unit on my Giant. The lower half of the display is cast aluminium & the upper half is plastic. I have no idea how this actually happened because I fell to the left and all the other damage was on the left side of the bike.

Is there a specific paint I should look for to touch up the metal part? Cany anything be done about the plastic upper half?

Thanks for taking the time...

You could sand them both down and spray with satin black.

Perhaps gentle go with a small fine file or nail file to rid the metal burr and the already mentioned.
Or you could probably source another Giant e-bike display from Giant but won't be cheap.

Yes, I was thinking that might be the only option but I was unsure as to what paint to look for.

Is there a protector that can go round them ? Bit like iPhone case type thingy ..

It's a bit late for that now but it is a good idea from new. I have no idea if anyone makes such a thing but I can't see anything on Ebay.

Satin black nail varnish?

This could well be the perfect solution. Thank you.

Yup, I'll bring home some fine sandpaper from work tomorrow and see how it goes. I am definitely not buying another display unit.

You may be able to smooth the plastic back to shape by using the end of a plastic screwdriver. By pressing the plastic handle against the damaged area and smoothing it like you are ironing it sometimes works back in to itself. I have used this method on car interior trim but it depends on the type of plastic.
The aluminium part just needs a careful use of a sharp knife or chisel to shave the metal that has been pushed upwards back down. A dab of primer and some black paint stippled on to restore the textured effect.

Giant do sell touch up paint but they dont stock it and have to order it direct from the factory . From memory i paid about £25-£30 for a 12ml tube of white .

Plasticote or Rustoleum - sell paint specifically for plastic. But to do a proper job you'll need to repaint the entire casing as there are dozens of shades of black you could never blend it. The bottom part looks like it's aluminium. The same paint will work. I've used Rustoleum on various car trim pieces and it works great.

On another look at the pic, Don't wish to worry you: I'm not sure, but has where the burr is pushed up lifted the plastic from the seal between the two? I'd keep an eye on it for water ingress if you can't remove it.

Yes, you're correct, well spotted. That's going to be a problem. I'm not particularly worried about water ingress because it doesn't really rain here. I haven't ridden in rain for literally years.

I need to figure out a way of removing the metal from the gap.

I don't know with this later type as mine is older oblong shaped display. If their are screws at the bottom of the unit holding the cover down, you could remove it as their must be a seal between the two to be able to reseal it when you replace it . You'll be able to file it down then from the top with the cover and seal removed. If It's not removable you may be able to go at it (Very Carefully) with a junior hacksaw blade or a small nail file.

Junior hacksaw blade! :stop: Very fine wet and dry and remove the burr with a fine file. If you can find somebody with a airbrush get them to touch it in for you, depending on the colour variation you might need to go over the whole thing. You should be able to get it so the repair is barely noticeable.
