I decided not to go for the tourer bike, I looked @ the Giant Defy 2, and as I am getting it though the cycle saver scheme I ordered it sorted the paper work out and posted the paper work.
I got to thinking this morning I should of gone for the Defy 1.
so I rang the LBS and asked if that was possible, they said yes not a problem so I spoke to payroll @ work and explained everything they said not a problem when the form you sent yesterday (Wednesday) as soon as they get they won't process it and to send in the new application.
So soon will be the proud owner of a Defy 1

The main upgrade between the Defy2 and Defy1 is the chainset/cassette/shifters, tiagra is ok, but it's also a bit of a dead end when it comes to upgrades and choice of components, 105 puts you into the 10 speed world which gives you more choice, and probably a better climbing gear ratio too!

The 2011 UK Defy 1 is Tiagra. They no longer make a 105 equipped Defy.

The 2010 Defy 2 was also Tiagra (2010 Defy 1 WAS 105).

As you rightly suggest, if the OP wanted to get to a 10spd setup then levers, chain and cassette would need to be changed at the same time - which is pricey. All of the other components can be swapped out one by one as and when they wear out.
