I am looking at up grading allready. I have now been reguarly cycling for 3 months first 2 months on a giant mtb second month on a cheap claude buttler criterium 250 quid from go outdoors. I go out in the week evening with my step daughter gems and maybe a mate and we do 15 miles in around 50 min to a hour. But I want to do a tt or two plus I want to get into doing sportives. I am 46 so never going to be great I just want to do as well as I canwith out spending thousands do you think the giant defy 3 will be a good choice ?

Good choice for a bike you can use for fun riding as well as being up to a bit of light racing. If it fits and you like the handling and components, but that caveat applies to any bike.

If you then get the n+1 urge again (eg something in carbon :-) ), it'll make a good winter bike while your shiny +1 is kept for nice days - it'll take mudguards and even a rear rack.

Slightly less relevant nerdy question - what's the tyre clearance? (or what length brakes does it have, and where are the blocks in the slots?)

Is this question aimed at the Giant Defy or the Claude Butler ?

Great bike for the money with a great frame if you choose to ever upgrade the bits over time. My Defy 2 is serving me very well indeed. They are pretty stretched out though...more than one has had a slightly shorter stem fitted, or even a frame a size smaller than expected.
@EvilClive
Defy clearances are tight...I wouldn't try > 25mm tyres on there.
Brakes are short drop calipers and the pad bolts have 2- 3mm before they hit the bottom of the mounting.

I love my defy2, although like others here I'm looking for my n+1 now (although I did sell my previous steed before moving on to the next one), I've convinced myself that the defy2 will be my winter bike, I've got the continental gatorskins ready and waiting!
