I appreciate that this request is very picky, and it's possibly just me who is mufty-fingered in this way, but when browsing on a tablet I tend to press 'chat' instead of 'what's new' and log out instead of 'alerts'.
Users hitting the wrong links is a fairly unfixable usability issue, and sometimes making the changes they inspire is a bit like insisting all cars have a top speed of 3mph to save lives, but with regards to these two mis-hits the consequences are more inconvenient than simply landing on the wrong page.
Do you use heat-map type analytics? I'd wager the two most often clicked links in the nav are 'alerts' and 'what's new'.
