Ok this won't be exciting for anybody else but for me this is great.
I've introduced myself on the new members thread, but in a nutshell I am 53 and recently had two total hip replacements. Reborn to road biking. For the first time tomorrow i am going to go somewhere I am just going (the saints v wasps game) and going on my bike rather than the car - 7 miles each way, my longest ride over the last 6 weeks since I re started is 11.7 miles

Good luck with the ride after your hip replacements and take it nice and steady. I'm 54 and every time I ride my bike it feels like the first time, doesn't get any easier!!!!!
Yes it does  I think that sometimes but I then realise I am either faster on a particular climb than I was or I am just getting up it easier.

I have the same experience. I am fitter at 58 than I have been for years and the best is yet to come!
I need a lighter bike to see much more improvement in overall performance, however theres always room for improvement, but your overall avg sp (not that I worry to much about it) can be dragged down by a heavier bike on the climbs ( I wont call them hills, not long enough).

I have lost 3 times the weight of my (18 pound) Cannondale so far and that has made a huge difference! I reckon I can lose almost another 1/3 to 1/2 a bike before I get to my optimum cycling weight.

I could lose some but at 6ft and 173lb (12 1/2 st) its not difficult to get below my ideal weight for age ( and thats only because I didn't ride much over the winter) I was down at . 167lb ( 12st last summer)

Keep at it - it does become easier.
I got back into cycling last summer and my first rides were on a 5mile flat loop around home - early speeds were 10-11mph and a knackered me. Now (after not riding Dec-early March) I'm doing 60 miles at 14.5mph average and feel OK at the end. Also did 25M @ 16.5mph 2 weeks ago which chuffed me no end.

BTW I'm 59, 5' 11" and about 195lbs.

BTW OP I hope your ride went well - good result for Saints !

What a result for the Saints! Unfortunately after having installed cyclemeter on my phone and getting a Topeak dry bag, and downloading my route from Strava to cyclemeter, I got lost en route. Although I know the town pretty well, I was going to take a slightly unusual route, and I followed the wrong cycle path. Cyclemeter turned off - there is a setting I was unaware of, and with time against me I returned home :surrender:, so it's been a bad weekend cycling but a good week for my bike, so must do better next week :bicycle:
