Can you get cranks off without a crank puller? Ive taken the bolt off, and ive tapped the cranks in the hope it will losen and come off, but it wont. I dont want to wack them too hard and bend them.
Ill probably be going around to someones house with a crank puller, but if i can get it off without it would be easier.
Ive got to take the cranks off one frame(the frame is wrote off, but the cranks are fine) and the other frame is my old fixed frame. The cranks from the wrote off frame are still good so they are going on my old fixed frame, because im building that back up again:becool:
Oh, and if you want to know what happened to the frame(well when it was a bike) for it to be wrote off. My mate was riding along home from work and some silly woman opened up a door on him. Apparently he was only doing about 18mph:eek:

silly mate too. tell him to ride at least a doors width away from parked cars.

i'm glad for him it's the frame that was bust, and not his neck:becool:

He normally does. Hes an older guy(nearly 60 but still does 100mile TTs faster then many people, he won the trophy for it last year!) and does know what hes doing.
I asked how he was after the accident, he just said bad and gave me a blank look:wacko::biggrin: Hes a strange guy.
His fixed was worth over a grand aswell

Mmm, I think you'd struggle with that. If you hit the crank with anything hard you're going to bend, crack or distort it. What you could try is a wedge of wood cut so that it fits behind the crank on either side of the BB spindle, like a door wedge with a notch cut out of the middle.

To be honest though it's seriously not worth the effort. Get a crank puller and the job's done!

Get a crank puller - I'd recommend the Park one.

+1 for the Park. If you get the one that's designed for square taper BBs then you can also do Octalinks and suchlike with an adapter. Definitely worth the £12 or so.

I got a puller off ebay for about £3.50...works absolutely fine with square tapers.

No denying a Park one will be better tho..

And when you are using the crank puller...

(1) Make sure that you don't cross-thread it.

(2) Screw it all the way in with the centre bit wound fully out, only then screw the centre bit in.

By getting (1) and (2) wrong, I managed to extract the thread of a crank once, rather than the crank itself! ;)

And (3), make VERY sure you've removed any washers before threading the puller in. I didn't and my Revolution crank puller got very stuck. As it didn't have flats for a spanner to grab hold of it I thought I was screwed but I was rescued by a fellow with an angle grinder. Now I use a Park tool and make damned sure I know what I'm doing before embarking on a job like this.;)

Just remember, a crap crank puller will cause no end of problems. The advantage with the 'better ones' is that the 'head' plate allows the puller screw to rotate, but the plate doesn't - so it's not biting into the end of the BB axel. The better ones also allow you to attach a socket to them, or a big spanner.

The Park one is brilliant !
